- Free
- The registry has no record of the name. Register it before someone else does.
- Likely free
- No nameservers, but the registry gave no answer. Confirm at a registrar.
- Taken
- Registered. Open the row to see the registrar, the expiry date and the status.
How it works
- Every name is first looked up in DNS. Nameservers mean it is registered, so taken names show up instantly.
- Names without nameservers go to the registry of the ending, over RDAP or classic WHOIS, which is the only source that really knows.
- Open any row for the details: who registered it, when it expires, or why a registry could not confirm it.
Frequently asked questions
How does isthedomainfree.eu check whether a domain is free?
First it looks the name up in DNS. A domain with nameservers is registered, so that answer is instant. Names without nameservers are then checked with the registry that runs the ending: over RDAP, the modern successor of WHOIS, or over classic WHOIS for country endings that have no RDAP yet. FREE means the registry itself has no record of the name.
What does LIKELY FREE mean?
The name has no nameservers, but the registry did not confirm it. Some registries, like those of .ch, .es and .pt, offer no public lookup at all, and others limit how many questions they answer per minute. Such a name is very probably free, but confirm it at a registrar before you get attached to it.
A domain shows FREE, but my registrar will not sell it. Why?
Registries keep lists of reserved and premium names that look unregistered from the outside, and someone may have registered the name seconds ago. Some endings also have rules about who may hold them: a .eu domain needs an EU or EEA citizen, resident or company, for example.
Do you keep or sell the names I search?
No. The names you check are not stored or logged by this site, and we never register, reserve or sell domains. The registry sees a question from our server, not from you.
Which domain endings can I check?
The Main, Europe and Special groups cover 58 popular endings with one click. Type a full domain such as myproject.berlin to check any other ending: every ending with an RDAP service works, which is all generic ones and a growing number of country endings.
Can I see who owns a taken domain?
Open a TAKEN row to see the registrar, the registration and expiry dates, the status codes and the nameservers. Owner names and contact details are usually redacted by the registry for privacy, so to reach an owner, go through the registrar listed in the record.
How do I pick a good domain name?
Short beats clever: a name that is easy to say out loud and to spell after hearing it once. Skip hyphens and numbers. Take .com for a global audience, .eu or a country ending for a European one, and check trademarks and social media handles before you register.
